Nicola Coughlan, the beloved star of "Bridgerton," is known for her sharp wit, her hilarious social media presence, and her portrayal of the ever-so-sassy Penelope Featherington – aka Lady Whistledown, the queen of Regency-era gossip. But even this confident actress admits that stepping into the spotlight as a leading lady in season 3 has been a nerve-wracking experience.
"When it rains terrifying, brilliant opportunities, it truly pours," Coughlan shared with Harper's Bazaar.
From "Derry Girls" to "Bridgerton" Royalty: The Pressure of Leading a Hit ShowADVERTISEMENT
Coughlan, who first gained recognition for her role as Claire in the hit comedy series "Derry Girls," is no stranger to the limelight. But season 3 of "Bridgerton" marked a new chapter, with Penelope taking center stage as her romance with Colin Bridgerton finally unfolds.
"But not only was this a journey that Pen had to embark on, it’s also one I had to go on myself," Coughlan explained, her voice laced with a hint of vulnerability. "I was presented with these brilliant opportunities but was racked with doubt as to whether I could take on the challenge.
This new chapter comes with a new level of scrutiny, with the eyes of the world watching her every move.
Living in the Public Eye: Finding Balance and Protecting Privacy
And it's this intense scrutiny that Coughlan has found particularly challenging.
"I feel it a struggle in the public eye, especially on social media, to strike the right balance," Coughlan confessed. "I don’t always want to present a glossy, idealised version of my life, and not show that it’s only me five per cent of the time."
She admitted to battling the internal conflict of wanting to be authentic while also protecting her privacy.
"On the other hand, I don’t want to share too much of what’s private and personal to me," Coughlan shared. "I try my hardest to be authentic; I’m always as truthful as I can be when I’m interviewed but, at the same time, do I want to let the world inside my home? No, I absolutely don’t."
More Than Just a "Bridgerton" Star: Coughlan's Career is Flourishing
While Coughlan's role as Penelope has undoubtedly propelled her into the spotlight, she's proving that she's much more than just a "Bridgerton" star. She recently starred in the new Channel 4 comedy, "Big Mood," alongside Lydia West, showcasing her comedic talents and versatility.
Finding Strength in Vulnerability: A Message for Fans
Coughlan's honesty about her anxieties is refreshing. She's showing that even those who seem to have it all can struggle with the pressures of fame and the ever-present scrutiny of the public eye.
"I’m always as truthful as I can be when I’m interviewed," Coughlan shared, highlighting her dedication to authenticity.
Her vulnerability and honesty are powerful reminders that even those in the spotlight are human beings, with fears, insecurities, and a desire to protect their personal lives. And that's a message that resonates with fans all over the world.
