Dad Who Spent 22 Years Trying to Find Daughter's Killer Dies by Suicide Outside Sheriff's Office
In a tragic and heart-wrenching turn of events, Jerry Harris, a 76-year-old Vietnam War veteran, took his own life outside the Fannin County Sheriff's Office in Bonham, Texas. For over two decades, Harris had been searching for answers in the unsolved murder of his 28-year-old daughter, Jennifer Harris, whose case has remained a haunting mystery since 2002.
On May 12, 2002, Jennifer Harris was last seen alive. Days later, her green Jeep was discovered abandoned along a rural road, and her naked, decomposing body was found floating in the Red River by local fishermen.
Harris’s body was found in the parking lot of the sheriff's office, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. On the day of his death, Harris left behind three letters, one addressed to Sheriff Mark Johnson.
Private investigator Jim Holloway, who worked closely with Jerry Harris on the case, described the toll it had taken on him: “I just remember him being so sad and broken down over this that he didn’t know who to turn to. He was bewildered, eaten up with sadness and sorrow. He told me once, ‘I hope they solve it before I die’”.
The case has gained renewed attention with the recent election of Sheriff-elect Cody Shook, who has pledged to review all cold cases, including Jennifer Harris's, using modern technology. “All families deserve closure regarding their loved ones,” Shook stated. “I look forward to having access to the cases and seeing if there are any investigative options that can be applied”.
Jennifer Harris's murder gained national recognition in 2018 when CBS's "48 Hours" aired a segment on the case, highlighting the persistent investigation and the mishandling of evidence that hindered progress.
Jerry Harris's death has left a profound impact on the small community where he lived. Many recall his dedication to finding his daughter's killer, with some expressing hope that his passing might lead to renewed efforts to solve the case. The tragedy of his death adds a new layer of sorrow to a family and community still grappling with unanswered questions.
The search for Jennifer Harris's killer continues, and the Texas Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $3,000 for information that could lead to an arrest. Meanwhile, those who knew Jerry Harris hope his determination will inspire a renewed commitment to finding justice for Jennifer, even after his passing.
