Knee pain can occur for various reasons, and understanding the type of pain can help identify the underlying problem. There are three main categories of knee pain based on location and description. Anterior knee pain is felt at the front of the knee and is common among runners or those with patellar tendonitis. Medial knee pain is experienced on the inside of the knee and can be caused by conditions like medial meniscus tears or arthritis. Lateral knee pain is felt on the outside of the knee and can result from problems such as iliotibial band syndrome or lateral meniscus tears.
