A professor and pastor in Texas, Dr. Johnson Varkey, was fired from his role at St. Philip's College after teaching students that sex in humans is determined by X and Y chromosomes. Despite denying injecting religious teachings into his lessons, four students walked out in protest. Varkey was notified of a complaint against him and two weeks later, he was issued a memorandum stating his behavior in the classroom was unacceptable. Varkey's legal representatives are demanding his reinstatement, claiming his firing was an unconstitutional act of religious discrimination. The college has not commented on the issue.
